A Day in the Life of a trainee...

Advanced Electives

Arthur Cox has been granted the status of Accredited External Provider of Advanced Electives. Our trainees undertake electives in:

  • Corporate Law and Practice
  • Finance Law and Practice
  • Commercial Real Estate Transactions
  • Advanced Civil Litigation

Providing this tailored approach to training means that we can impart hands-on experiences, real-life case studies and scenarios that trainees will encounter during their careers here.

Our Advanced Electives enable us to bridge the gap between traditional legal education and the demands of working in an international commercial law firm.

We believe that this will prepare our trainees for success and allow them to thrive in our firm.

It’s also a great opportunity for our trainees to foster relationships and connections at an earlier stage than usual – helping them to build a strong professional network across the firm.

By designing and delivering our own training we can weave in our own culture of excellence in client service into the learning experience.

A trainee's role

Sinéad had the opportunity to get involved in a secondment with a large tech and social networking firm. Here is a snippet of what this role involved and what you could also expect as a trainee.

Sinéad Corbett, Associate, Corporate and M&A

How did the secondment come about?

During my rotation with the Technology and Innovation team I was given the opportunity to join a large tech and social neworking firm for a four-month secondment. What sort of work were you doing?

I was seconded to the in-house data protection team that works alongside the Irish Data Protection Commission. I worked with data protection officers from all over the world – our team were based in Dublin, London, Amsterdam and Austin (to name a few). I was integrated into the team fully from the outset, and I was involved with a lot of really interesting work, both in relation to the GDPR and how it interacts with social media and the transfer of data between the United States and Europe. A lot of our work was research-based and revolved around the intersection between personal data and social media and how to protect personal data while maximising our experiences online. What did you find most interesting?

The most interesting part was seeing the impact of data protection on our day-to-day lives. The discussion around the right to data privacy is an evolving topic and it was great to be working in the heart of it with people who are at the top of their field. What did you find challenging?

I initially found the gap between the data protection specialists’ knowledge and my knowledge of data protection regulations difficult to bridge, however the Arthur Cox team and the team to which I was seconded were extremely helpful and always patient in explaining the relevant laws to me. By the end of my time, I was confident in my ability to contribute the team in a meaningful way. What did you learn from working with the client on secondment?

It was great to be working in-house with a prominent client as I learned what the output of the firm’s work should be. Clients hire Arthur Cox to provide a high quality service that is communicated in a clear and concise manner, and this was made extremely clear to me during my secondment. This has helped to shape the way in which I view my work and communicate with clients.

What did you enjoy most?

I enjoyed getting to work out of the tech firm’s office for a few months – it was an extremely high tech and fun office space to experience!
