What sets us apart?

Five rotations

We are the only Irish law firm offering our trainees the opportunity to complete five rotations during their traineeship. The five rotations allow our trainees to experience all of our core practice areas – Corporate and M&A, Finance, Litigation, Dispute Resolution and Investigations, Commercial Real Estate, and different types of legal work – advisory, litigious and transactional. This allows our trainees to identify their strengths and interests before choosing a group to qualify into.

Pro bono rotations

In 2021 we introduced the option of a rotation in our pro bono practice for trainees. This was in response to keen interest amongst our trainees in pro bono work.

Ability to submit preferences

Arthur Cox trainees can submit preferences for each rotation. This allows our trainees to influence the direction of their traineeship. We try our utmost to match trainees’ preferences with business needs. Our Trainee Programme Manager meets with each trainee before they submit preferences to offer them advice and guidance on their options.

Size of intake

The size of our trainee intake is 50. For trainees, their intake is a wonderful network and support structure and is one of the things trainees really value about training in Arthur Cox. Friendships are formed during the traineeship that last a lifetime.

Diverse academic backgrounds

We recognise the strength that comes from having diversity of thought in the teams we build. We have trainees, associates and partners from a variety of academic backgrounds, including music, psychology, maths and science, to name a few. Put simply, you don’t have to study law to pursue a career in law with Arthur Cox. We ensure that our application and interview processes do not disadvantage applicants who have not studied law. You will not be asked any legal questions during our interview process.

Career progression

Our Managing Partner, Geoff Moore, and many of our partners, trained with Arthur Cox. The sky is the limit in terms of career progression for trainees.

"I’m a proud Cork man. I studied law in UCC and then completed a Masters in Trinity. I joined Arthur Cox as a trainee in 1998. I was one of eight trainees in my intake, spread over a two-year period. I knew no one in the firm, I actually knew no one in law at all.”

Zambia Project

One of the most enjoyable and unique aspects of the Arthur Cox traineeship is the Arthur Cox Zambia Project. Every year our qualifying intake raises money for construction and development projects, working with local communities to raise standards of living in rural areas of Zambia. This project was set up in memory of our founder, Arthur Cox himself, who's final resting place was Zambia.

In the village of Masese, the project has renovated a rural medical clinic which provides services to a population of 5,700 people, installed bore hole water supply and running water, as well as building a seven-bed maternity ward. `The project has also been involved in building six rural radio schools in the Chikuni region.

Since 2008, over 200 volunteer trainee solicitors from Arthur Cox have travelled to Zambia and raised approximately €650,000 to fund the project’s initiatives.

A day in the life of a trainee

What stood out to you when you joined the firm as a trainee?

"The level of support and guidance I received from day one as a trainee in the firm. Everyone is always more than happy to share ideas, work together and offer a steer. There is always someone to reach out to."

Declan MacQuillan, Senior Associate

Advanced Electives

Arthur Cox has been granted the status of Accredited External Provider of Advanced Electives. Our trainees undertake electives in:

  • Corporate Law and Practice
  • Finance Law and Practice
  • Commercial Real Estate Transactions
  • Advanced Civil Litigation

Providing this tailored approach to training means that we can impart hands-on experiences, real-life case studies and scenarios that trainees will encounter during their careers here.

Our Advanced Electives enable us to bridge the gap between traditional legal education and the demands of working in an international commercial law firm.

We believe that this prepares our trainees for success and allows them to thrive in our firm. It’s also a great opportunity for our trainees to foster relationships and connections at an earlier stage than usual – helping them to build a strong professional network across the firm.

By designing and delivering our own training we can weave in our own culture of excellence in client service into the learning experience.
