AMY MATTHEWS

University of Galway

I took part in the Arthur Cox Summer Internship Programme July 2025. I was initially drawn to Arthur Cox due to the stellar reputation of their work and people. During the internship, I had the opportunity to get involved in various projects with my practice group, as well as the Amicus Project with the Pro Bono team. The variety of work allowed me to develop my skills and gain a real insight into life as a trainee.

I was placed in the Tax Group. From start to finish, every member of the team, from trainees to partners, made an effort to include me in real life work and were always there to answer any questions. I got to assist in legal research, as well as contribute to team meetings and sit in on client calls. This allowed me to see all sides of the work done by a solicitor in a leading law firm. In addition, the various department talks allowed me to gain an insight into the work of the other practice groups throughout the firm.

The training we received throughout the internship enabled me to really get involved in meaningful work. The support I received gave me the confidence to get involved wherever possible, which led to an enriching and rewarding experience. The allocation of a trainee buddy made the transition into the firm as seam-free as possible.

My fellow interns made the experience even more enjoyable, and we have all formed a close friendship. I would advise anyone considering applying for the Arthur Cox Summer Internship to go for it; you won’t regret it!

SARAH CURTIS

University College Dublin

I took part in the Summer Internship Programme at Arthur Cox in July 2025. During my month with the firm, I had an incredible experience which facilitated professional development while providing insight into life as a trainee solicitor.

As part of the firm’s Employment Group, I had the chance to see law in practice and understand the impact of the work done by the employment team. Being given the responsibility to oversee tasks and attend client meetings was really rewarding. Engaging directly with the employment team including trainees, associates and partners greatly enhanced my experience and gave me a greater understanding of how the team operates. Everyone was so approachable, which gave me confidence to reach out to the team with questions about work, career paths and the firm.

I was lucky enough to be involved with the firm’s volunteer work through the Amicus project and Clash of Companies. I appreciated the volunteering while learning about the work of charities such as Amicus and Children’s Health Foundation. The firm’s involvement with these fantastic initiatives, along with their impressive Pro Bono team, showed me that the firm recognises this work as a priority.

The training sessions organised for summer interns allowed us to get a taste of the work of each of the practice groups. This was a great opportunity to see the other work carried out within the firm. The internship programme is also very social, with events throughout the month as opportunities to get to know the other interns. I really enjoyed the intern trip to GoQuest and the firm summer party in the first week of the internship, as I had the chance to meet other interns and the people within the firm.

I really enjoyed my internship with Arthur Cox, and I would definitely recommend it to others who are interested in a career in law.

CONOR HEEREY

Trinity College Dublin

I completed the Summer Intern Programme in July 2025. I was placed in the Debt Capital Markets Group, where I gained a valuable insight into the work of the department and the firm.

Admittedly, at the start, I knew little about the area of work, but the team were incredibly willing to help and explain legal concepts and practice. The work was varied, with trainees, associates and partners all giving me tasks. It was great to get involved in work across the lifecycle of a transaction and I learned many important skills that I will use in college and my career. The team was great for providing feedback and allowing you to learn from the work you completed.

The friendliness of the team and other interns was the standout of the internship. Each intern is assigned a trainee ‘buddy’ to mentor them, providing many useful tips on the traineeship, university and the FE1s. I could see the friendliness of everyone at Arthur Cox through the many coffees and lunches that the interns attended. A real highlight was the firm Summer BBQ.

I would really recommend the Arthur Cox Summer Intern Programme to other students looking to see what life is like in a corporate firm.

KATE FENNELL

Trinity College Dublin

Coming from a non-law background in university, I was initially nervous to begin the internship, which I undertook in July 2025. However, from my very first day in the office, I was struck by the welcoming and warm environment in Arthur Cox. I joined the Corporate M&A Group, where I was designated a project that offered deep insight into a real-life transaction, while exposing me to the firm’s international client base. The team, from trainees to partners, were incredibly approachable and the firm’s ‘open door’ policy fostered a supportive and collaborative environment. My trainee buddy assisted me with any concerns/questions I had throughout the programme and was always available as a point of contact to provide any guidance.

One of the highlights of the programme was engaging in Pro Bono work. As interns, we all conducted research for Amicus. Furthermore, myself and another intern in my department assisted with a family reunification case over the four weeks, which was both rewarding and hands-on.

Another engaging part of the programme was the various events and activities we had over the course of the internship. We had talks from each practice group, which gave me an opportunity to gain an insight into departments I wasn’t collaborating with daily. The social events provided an excellent chance to get to know the other interns, making friends and connecting with like-minded individuals. We also received valuable information about the Arthur Cox trainee programme and the FE1 exams, which was both informative and inspiring.

Overall, the programme was incredibly fulfilling, and I received a comprehensive understanding into working in a corporate law firm. I would recommend the Summer Internship Programme at Arthur Cox to anyone considering a career in the legal domain.
